HOW TO WIN THE TEMPTATION BATTLE: IDENTIFY YOUR EMOTIONAL NEEDS

April 25, 2009

When you are tempted, there is an underlying emotional need that has to be identified and met in a healthy way.  H.A.L.T.S. can help you identify times when you are more vulnerable to temptation.   I’m not sure yet who came up with this acronym, but it’s been very helpful to me in my recovery.

H – HUNGRY41_08_86-halt-at-major-road-ahead_web

A – ANGRY

L – LONELY

T – TIRED

S – SICK, SAD, STRESSED, SCARED, SHAMEFUL

Temptation is not just a spiritual issue.  Your body and emotions can make you susceptible.   When temptation comes learn to ask:   “What am I feeling right now?”  Your feelings and emotions are really just the undercurrent of lust, masturbation, porn, and other types of temptation.

When you recognize what you’re feeling, you need to seek to meet that need in a healthy way.  Have an action plan in place for each of these areas.  Figure out what it takes for you to deal with your HALTS issues.  You might need to call a friend, take a nap, go be around people, get some exercise, read the Bible…whatever works best.

Those successful in recovery can identify their underlying needs better, and have developed healthy ways to meet them.
