The Truth About Lying to Others

October 1, 2009

Proverbs 28:13 “he who conceals his sins does not prosper,
but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.”

Yesterday’s blog looked at many reasons “Why We Lie to Others”. We talk ourselves into thinking it’s better to lie, and that the painless way is the way of deception (even though we would never call it that). I wanted to answer these reasons with truths.

WE THINK IT’S BETTER TO LIE

Truth – Lies only feed the darkness. Lies are sin and take us away from God. Lies break trust in relationships. We may hurt others by telling the truth, but we will never be able to be authentic and real if we are lying.

WE ARE TRYING TO KEEP PEOPLE OUT OF OUR BUSINESS

Truth – Our problems do affect other people. The people in the industry. The permiscuous woman, her family, her kids, her future. Our ability to have healthy relationships and a healthy sexuality.

WE WANT OTHERS TO BELIEVE WE’RE OK

Truth – We need others. Other people have problems just like we do. None of us are perfect, normal, without flaws or hurts. We only get help and heal in community with others. Admitting our weakness is a sign of strength.

WE BELIEVE IF WE TELL THE TRUTH WE WILL GET PUNISHED

Truth – We may have learned as a kid that it’s better to lie, but that’s poor parenting. God values truth. Generally, friends value truth. Our workplace values truth. Our spouse and kids value truth. Relationships are built on trust. Truthfulness is the gateway to trust.

WE BELIEVE OUR PROBLEM WILL EVENTUALLY GO AWAY

Truth – We are deceived into thinking that our problems go away. Lying grows deep inside of us. It rots our core. It will compound our problems, not sweep them under a rug. Our problems are often worse than we think they are.

truthHOW DO WE FIX IT?
Lying can only be fixed when we value the truth and tell the truth.

Value the Truth – You have to want to tell the truth. I think God is the only want who can help you with this. God has to change our hearts so that we want to tell the truth. Talk to Him. Spend time with Him in prayer asking Him to change your heart.

Tell the Truth – This takes courage. It is a fearful think to tell the truth. God can help with this too. Friends or a counselor can be a vital support for you as you tell the truth.
