When you’re in sexual addiction recovery, scriptures that have anything to do with sex jump out at you. King David committing adultery with Bathsheeba is one of those classic scriptures that we should pay attention to.

See II Samuel 11 to find this passage.

On the 06-22-2009 episode of Purity For Life podcast, Jeff Colon shares five things that led to David’s failure. These should be warnings to us who are seeking to be sexually pure.

FIVE THINGS THAT LEAD TO DAVID’S FAILURE

PRAYERLESSNESS – David is so busy with the battle and the kingdom, that he has gotten away from the deep praying he used to do.

PRESSURE – The stress levels from being king and fighting battles were very high. There are correct ways to turn to deal with stress, but David was turning the wrong direction. He was marrying a lot of women, and watching Bathsheeba take a bath.

PROSPERITY – Sometimes prosperity feeds us lies like “you deserve this”, or “you’re entitled to this privilege”. David began to feel like anything he wanted could be his, including another man’s wife.

SEEKING PLEASURE – Pleasure can be good if kept in its place. But expecting pleasure as a part of life is wrong, and very dangerous. David is obviously being driven by his lust and passions, instead of righteousness.

POWER – Related to entitlement. When we have power, we feel like we can get what we want. Power can also be used to manipulate people or woo people. We must be so careful with our power.
