Encouragement For the Weak and Weary

October 21, 2009

bibleHere are some great verses from Isaiah 40:29-31.  Some encouragement for us who are working on our sexual recovery, or our marriages.

29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;

31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Walking in the Lord’s direction is essential for anyone in recovery.  He is a key part of our recovery.  We get to humps that are impossible to us.  We hit the wall sometimes.  And like this scripture says, we can grow weary, weak and tired.  We can stumble and fall.

I’m thinking about “weary” and “weak” this morning.

WEARY (Tired)
There are many times during my sexual addiction recovery when I just get tired of doing it.  I’m tired of the struggle.  Tired of the stress.  Tired of the consequences.  Tired of the fight.  Tired of going to meetings and counseling appointments.  Tired of more talks with my spouse.

 Ever get there?

WEAK
There are other times when I just don’t have the strength for the day.  Maybe a series of bad events happened.  Maybe some more consequence.  Maybe things got worse.  Maybe I had a string of failures. Maybe I’m on the edge, and having a very triggery day.  There are days when I’m just weak.

HOPE IN THE LORD
Isaiah points the weak and the weary to the Lord.  He says “hope”, “wait” on the Lord.  I need to hang out in God’s corner and let His refreshment and strength come my way.  In His presence we will find the strength we need and the ability to continue through our difficult times.

THE NORMAL RECOVERY SUGGESTION
In recovery, we encourage the weak and weary to do something healthy and productive:

  • Call someone in your support group
  • Go hang out with your friends
  • Get out and take a break
  • Do something productive with your hands
  • Write your frustrations out in your journal
  • Read some recovery material
  • Get some exercise

These suggestions are great, but they are meant as supplements to us leaning on the Lord.  Call your friend, yes.  But have your friend pray for you right there on the phone.  Spend some time in the gym, good.  But carve out the time to lift your tired, weary, weak condition up to the Lord.

The best place for the weak and weary is the presence of the Lord.
