The Best Recovery Psalm – verses 4-5

November 3, 2009

Psalms are a great place to camp out when you are going through the struggles of sexual recovery.  Psalm 25 is incredibly relevant for those us.  During this blog series, we’ll read through this psalm with “recovery eyes” and highlight topics that can help you and me on our journey to stay sexually pure.

Psalm 25:4-5

4 Show me your ways, O LORD,
       teach me your paths;

5 guide me in your truth and teach me,
       for you are God my Savior,
       and my hope is in you all day long.

We have lived our own way in the area of our sexuality.  Probably for many years.  The person who is making progress in recovery is getting back on God’s path.  He realizes that his own ways were not the right ways.  We begin to give our sexuality back to God.  We start looking for His ways.  His paths.  We begin to want to go where God is going.

 There is also the believe that God’s paths are the right paths.  A lot of times this happens when we finally “bottom out”.

We cannot walk with God and hold on to lies.  Lies, secrets, sins are all roadblocks to us going the way God wants us to go in our life, our marriage, and with our sexuality.  We also have to decide that we will not lie about our behaviors anymore.  We choose to be open about them with God, and with others.  Being open and truthful is the only way we can achieve the sexual purity God wants us to have.

A teachable spirit is so important to recovery.  At first, we are so overwhelmed with our own problems, all we can do is talk about it.  We are self-absorbed.  We want people to feel our pain, sympathize with us, and validate us.  When we quiet our lips we can listen, and finally be teachable.  King David asks God to teach him.  A teachable spirit opens wide the gate to recovery.

When we are able to hope in the Lord, we rise above our circumstances.  Hope is getting our focus off of our present mess and putting it on God.  Hope is looking beyond the present, the hurts of the now, the pain, and the inactivity.  Hope is trusting, having faith.  Those who are recovering well are finally believing that the work they are doing now will pave the way to a better future.
