What Guys in Sexual Addiction Recovery Think About Tiger Woods

December 18, 2009

You may be tired of news about Tiger Woods.  But his story is bringing the issues of marital infidelity and sexual addiction to the forefront.

Tiger’s infidelity and his wife reaction are a central topics sexual addiction recovery groups.  Our weekly group probably spent 30 minutes talking about the story and how it was hitting us personally.

Here are three different reactions I’m finding from the men who are going through sexual addiction recovery.

REACTION #1:  IT’S HARD FOR ME TO WATCH
The story hits too close to home for some men and their wives.  The TV has to be turned off whenever a development comes on the news, not because they hate Tiger, but because his situation reminds them of their own pain and consequence.

Many others have infidelity in their marriages.  Many guys in recovery are dealing with the waves of consequences from their destructive choices.  Tiger’s story brings up feelings of shame.  The wounds are still fresh.

This is definitely the case for those guys who are new to recovery.  When a guy and his wife are in crisis, or just coming out of crisis, everything seems to remind them of the pain.

REACTION #2:  I FEEL FOR THE GUY AND CAN RELATE TO HIS SITUATION
Other guys who are going through recovery empathize with Tiger Woods.  They don’t condone what he has done, or the choices he or his wife or making, but they have been through some of the same issues.  They know some of what he is going through right now.  They know that he is worse than he thinks he is.  They know that he and his wife have a lot of work to do if want to find healing.

Guys with this reaction generally have months or years of recovery behind them.  They are out of the “crisis” stage, and into their healing.  They are able to have empathy for others.  They are learning the basics of coming alongside one another, an essential step in sexual addiction recovery.

REACTION #3:  THIS COULD BE THE BEST THING TO EVER HAPPEN TO HIM
The other reaction from guys I’ve been talking to has surprised me.  They are thankful that this exposure has happened to Tiger.  They believe that this could be the wake up call that Tiger needs to get his internal life straight.  They are hopeful that this situation might turn Him to God.

One friend mentioned, “Tiger has everything a guy thinks he needs… money, fame, a beautiful wife, and yet these can never satisfy his true need for God.”  Tiger is an example of someone who doesn’t have it all together, just like us.

Another friend said maybe God could even take someone like Tiger, save him, heal him, and use him as a spokesman for purity.

Wow!  I’ve never thought of these things.  These are “Big Picture” thoughts.  These are from guys I know who have been delivered from their sexual addictions, and have seen God take a person’s mess and use it for His glory.

ARE YOU PRAYING FOR TIGER?
We took some time in our recovery group this week to pray for Tiger Woods.

  • We prayed that he would come to know Jesus as his Savior.
  • We prayed for his wife.
  • We prayed that God would put people into his life that would speak truth, and help him begin the journey of healing.
  • We prayed that God would use this story to bring the taboo subject of sexual addiction out in the forefront.

This is our third Porn to Purity blog on Tiger Woods.  Here are the other ones you may find helpful.
