Girls in Church (Marsha's Take on Jeff's Recent Blog)

January 17, 2010

We have moved to porntopurity.com.
Recently Jeff wrote a blog commenting on the challenges men face with lust, even at church.  [Girls in Church:  A Tough Trigger]

Five years ago, I would have told Jeff that just because he had a problem with roaming eyes doesn’t mean women should wear turtlenecks and burkas to church.  The last thing we need is more legalistic congregations dictating what you can and can’t wear to worship.

However, in light of the journey we have been on over the last several years, I am now much more sensitive to my husbands concerns.  I get it that many men are visually trigged and struggle to keep their thought life pure and holy.  And because many men are so visual, as a Christ-following woman I can be more sensitive to that reality.  Just as I don’t want my words to be a stumbling block to others, neither would I want anything about my appearance to distract my brothers in Christ from focusing on the Lord, especially while they worship.

Although I feel I have always been very modest in how I dress, it’s mainly been because my personal fashion style is pretty low-key. (My sister is now laughing and asking ‘What style?’) But now I do check the mirror more closely before I step out, just to make sure the hem is not too high, straps aren’t showing, etc….  If there is any doubt in my mind, I err on the side of caution and change.  In the grand scheme of things, it’s really not a hardship at all to choose a different outfit that highlights my greatest asset – my commitment to Christ.

I’m suggesting to my sisters that in light of what we know, we could demonstrate grace and dress more modestly in an effort to support our brothers in Christ.  Yes, I have freedom in Christ to dress how I want.  But I don’t mind limiting my choices to those styles that don’t cause minds to wander.  And for those women who show up to church in something you wouldn’t be caught dead wearing — show them some grace as well.  We are talking counter-culture living now.  Our entire society practically revolves around the pursuit of eternal youth, sex and power.  Don’t pass out dress codes with your bulletins.  Do love people where they are.  And be thankful that one day, as followers in Christ, we will be wearing eternal robes.  In the end, that is all that really matters anyway

Check out this Letter From Christian Guys that I stumbled across a few months ago.
